Solar Eclipse Safety Reminders

Solar Eclipse

Dear Long Beach USD Community,

We want to ensure you are well informed about the upcoming solar eclipse scheduled for Monday, April 8, 2024. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, casting a shadow on the earth's surface. We are excited about the opportunity to witness this rare astronomical event. In Long Beach, the eclipse is expected to begin at 10:05 a.m. and conclude around 12:22 p.m., with its peak occurring at 11:11 a.m. when the moon will partially obscure the sun.

Ensuring the safety of our students during the solar eclipse is critical. While students may be outdoors for various school activities such as class changes, recess or physical education, they must understand and adhere to safety protocols. We kindly request that parents review safety procedures with their children, emphasizing never to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. On the day of the eclipse, our teachers and staff will closely monitor students and remind them of the importance of protecting their eyes.

Solar Eclipse Eye Safety Facts and Information

Looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection is unsafe. It is ONLY safe to look directly at the sun through special solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses,” that comply with transmittance requirements. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun.

If you are sending your student to school with eclipse glasses, please follow the recommended guidelines in this document.

We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all our students during this extraordinary astronomical event.

Thank you,

Long Beach Unified School District
